How to stop insomnia

Amongst the many symptoms they have to deal with, insomnia might just be one of the most difficult ones to cope with.

Why?

Because it can have a really negative impact on your daily life.

Not having enough REM (rapid eye movement) sleep can not only affect your eyebags…

It can drastically impact your:

  • Concentration levels
  • Memory
  • Mood
  • Appetite
  • Energy levels

This can cascade and feed into a scary & destructive cycle ofinsomnia...

Where having less sleep causes you to experience one or more of the problems above, and the repercussions of that problem, in turn makes you sleep less.

Winter season can aggravate insomnia

When we think of winter, many think of the hibernating & sleep inducing effect it has on animals.

But for people, it can have the opposite effect.

Winter has been known to lead to sleepless nights and insomnia.

Why is that?

Well, we’re here to answer that question.

Here’s 3 reason why insomnia worsens during the winter:

#1 Darker days

In the winter, daylight doesn’t last as long, and the sunlight is scarce.

For this reason alone, you may feel extra sleepy and lethargic throughout the day.

So, when it’s time to sleep, it may be hard to sleep because you have been sluggish and lazy all day, and your body simply doesn’t feel as though it is time to go to bed.

Essentially, the lack of daylight hours has confused your sleep/wake cycle.

Solution: Sunlight, lots of it.

When you are exposed to light first thing in the morning it inhibits melatonin production and stimulates cortisol, which keeps you awake for the day.

First thing in the morning, open the blinds and/or curtains in your home and allow the sunlight to come streaming in.

Even better, put on some warm clothes and go for a walk or sit outdoors on your porch as you sip on your morning coffee or tea.

Just 15-30 minutes of sun exposure early in your day will do wonders for your sleep  cycle and make it easier for you to fall asleep.

(Artificial light works, but it is not quite as effective as natural sunlight.)

#2 Temperature matters

The temperature matters when you’re trying to sleep.

It's normal to turn on the heaters at night to keep warm, but unfortunately, if you keep the house too warm, it will negatively impact your ability to sleep.

We tend to sleep better when in colder environments, because we are naturally programmed to drop our core temperature when we are going to sleep.

And having too warm a temperature will interrupt that important temperature drop.

Solution: Find the optimum temperature.

The National Sleep Foundation suggests you sleep in a room that is between 60 and 67 degrees Fahrenheit for optimal sleep.

If your bedroom is too warm or you are overdoing it with blankets and warm pajamas, it can disrupt the production of melatonin and contribute to insomnia.

#3 Too much hearty meals

We tend to eat more filling meals during the winter months.

Feasting on hot comfort foods is the best way to warm our insides throughout a cold winter’s day.

However, if you eat these kinds of meals too late in the day it can keep you up at night, as they take longer to digest and can cause gastrointestinal discomfort.

Solution: Avoid eating heavy foods and meals within four or five hours of bedtime.

If you must eat close to bedtime, opt for a small snack that promotes sleep.

Here are some snacks you can fill up on that helps you sleep better:

  • Plain rice mixed with warm milk
  • Kiwi and cottage cheese
  • Spice dusted popcorn
  • Smooth soup or warm broth
  • Herbal tea and dried fruit
  • Cherries or natural cherry juice
  • Sweet potato and almond butter
  • Banana smoothie
PS. Sleeping through the night can be hard to do by itself…

Without the additional problems the long winter night brings.

And when you do finally drift off to sleep...

Boom.

Night Sweats.

Countless women have been jolted awake at 3am, soaked with their own sweat, exhausted both physically and mentally.

And by the time they showered, changed into a fresh set of pajamas and tucked themselves back to sleep…
