I entered early menopause around age 40, so I decided to try the National Institute of Health’s HRT regimen of a 0.1 estradiol patch combined with 10 days a month of medroxyprogesterone.
Prior to HRT I didn't get hot flashes, but did have some disrupted sleep and anxiety. After being on this regimen for one and a half months I realized it was making my anxiety and insomnia way worse and also giving me horrible leg muscle tension, so I stopped cold turkey.
My sleep improved immediately but overall I felt way worse than I did prior to HRT with hot flashes at night, aches and pains, depression, anxiety etc. I sprouted a bunch of grey hairs on the front of my head. I'm just now feeling more like myself only four and a half months later.
My only explanation is that the abrupt stopping of estradiol led to a withdrawal which was stressful for my body. Perhaps this could have been prevented from slowly tapering off by cutting the patch, but I can only guess at this point.
I really HATE the idea of being dependent on medication for the rest of my life, and the idea that if I run out of it for whatever reason (e.g. forgetting to bring it on vacation) I'll suddenly start feeling horrible.
A withdrawal period after only one and a half months at age 40 is one thing, but I can't imagine going through a withdrawal like that in my later years, at 60s/70s/80s after decades of HRT - it could be downright dangerous?
I know some women plan to stay on HRT for life but I don't want to feel locked to a medication and scared to come off it. I also can't ignore the fact that I seem to feel better off HRT, but I'm scared about what I've heard about hormonal deficiency leading to skeletal, cardiovascular, and brain issues.
So here I am caught between a rock and a hard place. My gut is telling me to go without HRT for now

In Tammy’s case, it gets pretty bad and she started experiencing menopausal symptoms she didn’t even had before starting HRT.
Now HRT isn’t all bad. In fact, if you’re compatible with HRT you should definitely give it a try because it does help restore hormonal balance.
However, some people, like Tammy, either need more time to figure out the “perfect” hormone regimen, or simply just can’t take HRT.
For those women who might feel like they’re losing out on HRT, and have no solutions to help with their menopausal symptoms…
