3 Powerful Women Who Fought Against Menopause Stereotypes

“Society expects me to vanish from public life...which has negatively impacted my self-esteem, self-confidence & relationships (both personal and professional)”

Did you know that over 61% of older women feel that typical ‘menopausal stereotypes’ found in everyday social media, at their workplace & even in their personal relationships have affected them emotionally and mentally?

They also admitted that they have struggled with menopause, however, they believe that they would cope better if it was addressed more publicly in a positive way.

So, how can we address menopause in a positive way?

Well…

We should be more aware of the struggles, symptoms & impacts of menopause in a women’s life. We should also not shy away from openly discussing this with our peers, colleagues & relatives. It’s not something to be ashamed & shy about, it’s a part of life.

However, in today’s day & age with technology, social media, and advertising - it’s harder to breakthrough such stereotypes and the negative connotation that follows the word ‘menopause’.

At the same time, there have been 3 significantly powerful women who have openly spoken about menopause and helped influence their field to surpass these ‘stereotypes’ & be more accepting of these symptoms.

Today we want to share more about what they have done for us ladies :)

#1 Diane Danzebrink

She is the founder of the Menopause Support which ran a successful campaign called #MakeMenopauseMatter.

The aim of the campaign was to significantly improve menopause education amongst GP’s in Britain - as GP’s receive very little menopause education during their training, leaving them ill equipped to recognize and manage a phase of life that will directly affect at least 50% of the population.

She additionally, helped raise awareness within the workplace and for all employers to have menopause guidelines in place to be able to support women experiencing symptoms. This is vital as 1 in 10 women leave the workplace due to menopause symptoms.

She has managed to get over 100,000 signatures, only 50,000 signatures short of making GPs receive mandatory menopause education during their training & implementing menopause guidelines in workplaces.

#2 Jeanie Linders

She is the writer and producer of the smash hit ‘Menopause: The Musical”.
She had an idea for a play about a change that every single woman goes through & her idea started in a small theatre in Orlando in 2001, and today, it’s been seen by more than 9 million people in 60 cities and 12 countries.
What is the musical about?

Well, you guessed it ‘menopause’. The musical follows four mature women shopping for lingerie & sing about - chocolate cravings, hot flashes, loss of memory, nocturnal sweats and secual predicaments. The lyrics are informative & display the true emotional rollercoaster every menopausal woman goes through.

Jeanie has managed to educate not just women, but men too about menopause through her popular & critically acclaimed musical.

#3 Kathy Abernethy

Kathy is the chair of the British Menopause Society, the professional society for healthcare practitioners. She has implemented ‘the menopause course’ an educational initiative for nurses and doctors - to educate them on events relating to menopause.

She is also an author of the book “Menopause: The One-Stop Guide” which provides a range of material to help women understand their menopause, with sensible and practical advice.

The book evaluates the most common approaches to menopause and offers women all the information they need to determine whether medication or other forms of treatment will work best for them. It also gives detailed information about the physiological & psychological effects of menopause & it’s treatment.

Kathy has managed to not only help menopausal women with their symptoms, but she has also trained over 40 workplaces to implement menopause friendly regulations to support the women going through it.

As 2020 has begun - we’re asking women, like yourself, to make a contribution to fight against these stereotypes & taboos at - your workplace and in your personal life.
