Why Does Coffee Taste Different For Women In Menopause.

“Is anyone else experiencing a change in taste? After menopause, my taste buds seem just…off.

My favorite wine tastes sour, cheese tastes old, and the worst one of all...garlic tastes bitter. Garlic?! Are you kidding me? How will I survive this? 😢

One time I kept telling my husband the asparagus had gone off, and he kept eating it and saying, ‘No, it’s fine.’ It tasted awful to me. That was the first time I noticed my sense of taste had changed. The next morning was the last time I drank coffee (the horror). It's just too bitter for me now.

Just tonight, I made a tray of beautiful roasted turkey legs tonight, took one bite and lost my appetite. Same goes for the thai spiced beef that I made for lunch.

Everything I used to love just suddenly tastes gross to me except for fish. And as some kind of sick joke, I find myself liking the things I’ve hated for the past 50 years, like brussel sprouts.

I love cooking (and eating), and the thought of me having to eat brussel sprouts & fish for every meal for the next few years because it’s the only two foods I can stand, haunts me to no end.

Can anyone tell me why this is happening? Is there a solution to my taste bud nightmare?” - Rebecca C, 53

Does your morning coffee taste overly bitter, your dessert a bit less sweet, or maybe you have a constant bitter or metallic taste in your mouth?

And like Rebecca, your taste buds have changed drastically and all your favorite foods suddenly become absolutely revolting?

It’s unfortunate, but your taste buds might have changed because of menopause.

Why does taste changes happen during menopause?

During menopause, your estrogen levels take a dip.

The declining levels of estrogen can directly affect the mucosal membranes in your mouth — affecting your taste buds directly so your sense and taste of sweet, salty and sour foods can be completely altered.

What to do about taste bud changes?

First, see an ear, nose, and throat specialist to rule out more serious possibilities.

Once you’re sure that it’s 100% menopause that’s messing with your taste buds, are a few things you can do to enjoy your meals more:

Tip #1: Always hydrate

Keeping the mouth hydrated is one way to combat a loss of taste: chewing sugar-free gum and drinking plenty of water during menopause may help.

The hormonal imbalance can also make the mouth drier, which can make it more difficult to eat certain food and affect taste. So drink up whenever you can!

Tip #2: Spice it up!

Using new and different spices and flavors can trigger stronger sensations. Here are some different spices combinations you can try:

Mexican — Chili powder: 1 Tbsp (15ml), Lime: (Juice from 1 lime)

Greek — Oregano: 1 Tbsp (15ml), Olive Oil: 2 tbsp (30ml), Lemon juice: 2 tbsp (30ml)

Italian — Oregano: ½ Tbsp (7ml), Garlic: 3 Cloves (½ tsp or 2.5ml powdered), Basil: ½ tbsp (7ml), Tomatoes: 1 diced can

Indian — Cumin: ½ Tsp (2.5ml), Curry powder: 1 tbsp (15ml), Coriander: ½ tsp (2.5ml)

Chinese (this makes a marinade or stir-fry sauce) — Ginger: ¼ tsp (1ml), Soy Sauce: ¼ cup (59ml), Rice Vinegar: 2 Tbsp (30ml), Garlic: 3 cloves (½ tsp/2.5ml powdered), Dash of Red Pepper Flakes, Sugar (Honey): 1 tbsp (15ml)

Tip #3: Add some luxurious fat

Add fat. Healthy fats, while they may not increase the flavor, can improve mouth feel – that lovely sensation of richness. That can often fill in the gap flavor leaves behind.

Tip #4: Stop smoking

Smoking has a negative effect on estrogen levels. It can decrease flavor and smell sensitivity even quicker.

Tip #5: Try eating simpler

Simple foods may be easier to enjoy because the flavors aren’t diluted in combination. Go with one or two ingredient dishes.

Don’t, however, increase the sugar and salt just to get the same level of flavor you’re used to — too much of those can be really bad for your body, and chances are you’ll adjust in time to subtler flavors.

PS. These tips are great for helping you get used to the change in taste!

But if you want to “reverse” what menopause has done to your taste buds, you need to do something about the hormonal imbalance that’s turning your sense of taste askew.

Is there a solution for hormonal imbalance?

Yes there is — hormonal supplementation.

By supplementing the body with the hormones it needs to maintain hormonal balance, your sense of taste will return to normal, and you can finally enjoy the foods and drinks you know and love again.
