Hey there!
It’s me, Madison Young, here to welcome you back to another one of your favorite Workout Wednesdays!
But this Workout Wednesday will be a bit different than our usual ones because...
To be more specific, massages that will help ease arthritic pain.
While joint pains are all inevitable as we age, as women approach menopause, typically between the age of 45 and 55, they start experiencing symptoms of arthritis.
This is because, as the levels of estrogen in your body begin to drop, your joints become less capable of holding water, which can affect the hydration and lubrication of the joint tissues, causing joint pains.
Research has shown that massages with moderate pressure stimulates pressure receptors, can help:
However, before we show you the massages we have in store, do proceed with caution if you have:
So, ready to get the best self massages you’re going to give/get?
Firstly before starting the massages, warm up your muscles by either applying a hot water bottle with a towel over it so as to avoid burning, or use a heated (and scented if you wish) rice bag which you can put in the microwave and place over the skin.
And if needed, heat up some baby oil or lotion and warm them up by rubbing your hands if you need lubrication.
All warmed up and ready to go? Here are the massages we have in store for you today:
It is important to warm the muscles up before starting to massage. Do this by laying your hands flat against the skin and moving in circular movements to ensure the muscles are ready.
After warming up the neck muscles use your fingertips to exert light pressure on your neck to check where the sensitive spots are. Adjust your pressure accordingly.
A lot of people hold tension at the back of their neck or in the muscles between their ears and the back of the neck, so it is a good idea to explore this area first with your fingertips. Remember we should never experience pain through massage.
Our hips can sometimes take a little more pressure than more fragile areas such as our necks, so we will use the heel of our hand to build up to a more moderate pressure.
It can be difficult for us all to bend over and reach our feet, so it is a good idea to use a little help. This is called a plantar fascia stretch and is easily done with a frozen water bottle.
If you have a spare cork lying around, grab it because it can help ease the strain on massaging your hands. It is small and easy to handle but can also help us to build up pressure, saving our vulnerable thumbs from having to do any more work.
Remember, massage should never be painful!
So if any of these cause you pain then STOP. If you are in any doubt please consult your doctor before embarking on any of these massages.
With that, we’ve come to the end of our mini massage session!
We hope these self-massages provide you with sweet relief from those annoying joint pains.
If you have problems getting up in the morning due to arthritis, we recommend doing Self-Massage #4: Foot Massage to help you get started in the mornings!
Here’s Madison signing off, see you next Wednesday for another round of workout!
