Women don't expect to lose their hair (unlike men). So, when it happens it’s extraordinarily traumatic.
We have, on average, 100,000 hairs on our scalp and even through our many changes in hair lengths, roots and visits to our hairdressers, those hairs do still manage to grow.
In fact, 90 percent of our hair is actively growing at any given time.
Well, the first step is to find out what’s causing it, and your age plays a big part in figuring out the culprit for those fallen cuticles.
The most common reasons for hair loss in the younger demographic are often different from their older counterparts.
Most importantly, regardless of age, identifying the cause and addressing it early comes first.
We’ll discuss the most common causes for women of different age groups here:
Few people expect hair loss to happen as early as their 20s or 30s...
But the good news is, hair loss during these decades is usually caused by a specific trigger.
And when that trigger is addressed, it will most likely stop the hair loss.
Three of the most common triggers women in their 20s or 30s deal with are stress, dieting, and hormonal changes.
#1: Stress
Prolonged stress can weaken your body. Whenever the body is stressed, it enters a “fight-or-flight” state, in which hormones such as adrenaline and cortisol are released, increasing your heart rate and boosting energy supply to vital body functions.
As you can imagine, hair is last on the list of priorities.
Every hair follicle goes through growth and resting phases.
A body under stress pushes hairs out of the growth phase and into the resting phase, and hairs prematurely pushed into the resting phase will eventually fall out.
You might see your hair start shedding around 3 months after a very stressful event, and it can last for 3 to 6 months.
But you won’t go bald from stress-induced hair loss.
Once the stress passes, most people see regrowth 3 to 6 months later.
Depending how long your hair is, it can take 12 to 18 months to fully correct itself.
According to the American Academy of Dermatology, stressors that can cause hair loss include:
#2: Dieting
Crash dieting can have two negative effects on your hair.
First, your body perceives rapid weight loss as a stressful event — it thinks you are starving!
Second, some diets deprive the body from getting the nutrients it needs to grow healthy hair.
In times of stress or nutrient shortages, the hair is usually the first thing to go. These two factors are why a large number of women with eating disorders suffer from hair loss.
Hair loss from stress corrects itself over time. But, if you have a protein or vitamin deficiency, that could limit the hair’s ability to grow back. It can also change how the hair looks, making it drier, duller, and more prone to breakage.
To prevent hair loss, choose a weight loss plan that is slow and steady.
The Mayo Clinic recommends losing between 1/2 to 2 pounds per week.
Along with this, make sure to eat a balanced diet complete with:
#3: Hormonal changes
This might be old news, but hormonal changes can affect hair growth.
Specifically, higher estrogen levels make your hair thicker and fuller.
Contrarily, when estrogen levels drop, hair tends to fall out.
Fortunately, hair loss should stop as your body adjusts to your new estrogen levels.
While estrogen helps hair, progesterone can cause or worsen hair loss.
Women with health conditions that cause hormone imbalances also have a higher risk of hair loss.
Examples include:
To see if you have one of these conditions, your doctor might test your hormone levels if your hair loss comes with symptoms like:
If your hair loss is from a progesterone-based birth control, it should resolve when you stop using it. If the issue is a hormone imbalance, identifying and correcting it is necessary to get the hair back.
As you hit your 40s and 50s, hair loss unfortunately, becomes more common.
For most women, genetics are to blame.
For some, the repercussions of reckless hair care practices tend to catch up with them in these decades.
And the most troublesome of all, once menopause hits, a whole laundry list of symptoms start appearing, including hot flashes and hair loss.
#1: Genetics
The most common reason for hair loss in both men and women is located right in their body.
That’s right, genetics.
You can inherit the genes for hair loss from either one or both of your parents.
In women, hereditary hair loss usually starts after the age of 40.
Roughly 40% of women have detectable hair loss by the age of 50. And less than half of women get through life with a full head of hair.
Hereditary hair loss looks a little different in women than it does in men.
You might find that your parting gets wider or your hairline is further back than it used to be.
In most women, it progresses slowly over years, but without treatment, thinning might affect the whole scalp.
Women tend to lose less hair than men do, but it’s important to acknowledge that compared to men, women tend to socialize less and have poorer quality of life because of hair loss.
Fortunately, early treatment can stop and even reverse the process in most cases.
#2: Traumatic hair styling
In middle age, the repercussions of what we did when we were younger finally catches up to us.
When it comes to hair, this could mean all the traumatic styling we did in our 20s and 30s.
Relaxers and hot combs cause inflammation.
Braids, weaves, twists, and tight ponytails put pressure on hair roots.
This damages hair follicles and can lead to scarring and permanent hair loss. The first sign might be thinning at the hairline or loss of hair at the top of the scalp.
If you regularly style your hair, try adopting some of these preventative measures to keep your hair intact:
#3: Menopause
Menopause naturally happens at an average age of 49 to 51 years.
Once menopause starts, a dramatic drop in estrogen levels causes hair to become thinner (especially at the top and sides of the scalp) and grow more slowly.
Some women will also notice more facial hair. If you are prone to hereditary hair loss, menopause makes it worse.
Another possible reason for hair loss after menopause is inflammation.
Inflammation can destroy hair follicles and leave scarring, causing the hairline above the forehead to recede and possibly eyebrow hairs to shed.
It’s important to identify and treat inflammation as soon as possible. Once scarring sets in, hair cannot grow back.
PS. Things might look a little bleak if you are planning to have a full head of hair heading into your golden years…Menopause can and will find a way to ruin the quality of your hair, but that doesn’t mean you have to watch helplessly!
