Beat menopausal insomnia with 5 simple tricks!

Find it increasingly harder to sleep ever since going through menopause?

Don’t worry, you’re not alone.

On average, around 12% of women experience sleep complaints as a whole.

However, as women approach their late 40s to 50s, that percentage shoots up to as much as 60%.

That means more than half of menopausal women experience sleep disturbances that can affect their quality of life.

How hormonal changes affect sleep

Menopause is a time of major hormonal change — and the fluctuating hormones can wreak havoc and interfere with precious sleep.

Specifically, the decline in progesterone may be the main culprit since progesterone has a sleep inducing effect by acting on brain pathways.

Melatonin, the hormone most associated with sleep, decreases naturally with age.

Unfortunately, melatonin production is influenced by the drop in estrogen & progesterone levels during menopause, worsening the problem.

Causes of menopausal insomnia

Heightened levels of anxiety — the hormonal turmoil the body experiences can contribute to higher levels of anxiety, which affects sleep quality. Anxiety can also cause non-regenerative sleep and premature awakening.

Night Sweats — night sweats are hot flashes that occur at night. Night sweats are sudden waves of heat that cause you to sweat profusely. After the ordeal, the heat & adrenaline can make it hard to fall asleep.

Restless Leg Syndrome — restless leg syndrome is another symptom that might disrupt sleep. Sufferers get tingling, creepy crawly sensations in their legs at night which makes them toss and turn to no end. RLS happens twice as much to women compared to men, with symptoms worsening going through menopause.

Are there any solutions for menopausal insomnia?

The traditional treatment for menopausal symptoms like hot flashes and insomnia is typically hormone replacement therapy (HRT). It consists of low doses of artificial hormone in pill, patch or cream form.

However, HRT just doesn't sit right with some women, and can cause some harsh side effects like nausea, vomiting and abdominal pains.

So, here are some simple and natural tips and lifestyle hacks you can try for better sleep:

Tip #1: Go to sleep and wake up at the same time everyday

However tempting it is to sleep in on the weekends, especially if you’re dealing with insomnia all week…do try to get up at the same time everyday. By going to sleep and getting up at the same time everyday you train your body to accept the new sleep pattern you’re setting.

Tip #2: Eliminate caffeine

Cut down on caffeine if you can. The side effects of caffeine — like increased alertness — can last for several hours up to 24 hours, so the chances of it affecting sleep are significant.

Tip #3: Do not eat or drink right before going to bed

We know eating a snack right before bed feels really good, but you need to resist. Eating a late dinner or snacking before going to bed can signal to your body that you need to digest food and it keeps you up. Also, drinking a lot of fluids prior to bed can overwhelm the bladder, requiring frequent visits to the bathroom that disturb your sleep.

Tip #4: Make your sleeping environment comfortable

The simplest tip out of all.  Make sure the temperature, lighting, and noise are at the right level to make your bedroom a conducive environment to sleep in. Your sleep environment should feel nothing but comfortable, so if you have a pet that sleeps in the room with you, consider having the pet sleep somewhere else if it tends to make noise in the night.

Tip #5: Use bamboo sheets or 100% cotton sheets

Bamboo sheets and 100% cotton sheets are the best bedding to keep you cool at night. Cotton is both temperature regulating and sweat-wicking, which can come in handy when night sweats occur.
