Hey gals, just wanted to share a couple of changes I have recently made that are having a positive impact on my menopausal life so far. But first, a little backstory to illustrate the then and now...
I'm 48 and have been aware of my physical and mental health changing since my early 40's.
At first, it was mostly positive. My libido went through the roof, I had a great workout routine and even went to the gym for several years. I had really good energy and felt like I could "do it all." I changed my career, divorced my alcoholic ex, and bought my own house. All this coming from someone who grew up in poverty and trauma.
At 45 I started having night sweats but they weren't enough to break me. Then I went off the pill at 46 and it all hit me like a runaway freight train. Suddenly I was exhausted and in a state of low level pain all the time. Nauseous, dizzy, hot and sweating, but then cold and shivering. Morning muscle pain was pretty awful. My feet hurt so bad when I stood up.
I had a bunch of tests done but nothing showed up. My doctor was throwing around the word "fibromyalgia." I couldn't work out much because I would end up so sore I could barely move. I gained a minimum of 20 lbs between 46 and 48.
In the last 3-4 months I started having intense carb cravings. I never felt full. I was having a lot of anxiety, night panic attacks, and insomnia. My focus and memory were complete crap and I was worrying about my new job because I wasn't meeting production.
So I told my doctor I wanted to try bupropion, an antidepressant. Right away, the cravings stopped. By day 3 I was in a social situation that normally would have caused high anxiety but I almost enjoyed it!
I've still had all the muscle pain and have been learning about fibro. I already am on a low tyramine diet due to migraine and that helped a lot to reduce my flare-ups. But this morning muscle pain has persisted.
While doing my own research about fibro I stumbled onto something. Stevia, the "natural" sweetener, may be something to avoid. Then it hit me. I switched to Stevia around 2 years ago. I add an ample amount of it to my coffee every day. So last Monday, I stopped having it and — it's a miracle! I have not had morning muscle pain the entire week!
Implementing these little changes takes some research, time and effort, but it's definitely improving my life. Now, what worked for me may not work for you, so please consult with your doctor before trying them out! What’s important is that you should keep trying to make things better instead of just enduring it. Don’t give up!
